Question: Chemotherapy and Pain

I am scheduled to begin chemotherapy next week, more specifically intravenous chemotherapy. I have heard that chemotherapy will be painful. Is this true?

Answer: The only pain or discomfort you should feel during chemotherapy sessions is the initial needle stick that allows medication to be delivered to your vein. IV chemotherapy is usually given in the lower arm or hand. An common alternative is a port (sometimes called a port-a-cath), which is an implanted device that allows blood to be drawn and drugs to be infused without repeated needle sticking.

If you experience any discomfort or sensations such as cooling, burning, or anything unusual where the IV was started, notify your oncology nurse or doctor immediately.

It is common, however, to experience a cold or slight burning sensation once the medication enters the vein. This feeling varies depending on the chemotherapy drug prescribed. It is still important to let your nurse or doctor know that you are experiencing these sensations.

Any unusual sensations experienced at the IV site after the session has ended should also be reported to your doctor.
