HGSIL

By , About.com Guide

About.com Health's Disease and Condition content is reviewed by the Medical Review Board

Definition: acroynm for high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion, a category of cervical dysplasia detected through a routine Pap smear. An HGSIL Pap smear result indicates moderate to severe cervical dysplasia. It does not mean cancer is present; however, if left unmonitored or untreated, then it may develop into cervical cancer.

When a woman's Pap results show high-grade dysplasia, then a colposcopy exam is done to confirm the results. A colposcopy exam is a cervical exam that is aided by a colposcope, a lighted instrument that magnifies the cervix.

Also Known As: HSIL, high grade cervical dysplasia
