British reality TV star Jade Goody has died, losing her almost year long battle with cervical cancer. She was diagnosed with the devastating disease in August of 2008. By February of 2009, the cancer had metastasized - becoming terminal. According to various news sources, Goody died in her sleep amongst family. She is survived by her husband and two young children. My deepest sympathies go to Jade's family and friends.
Jade Goody's cancer teaches us a vaulable lesson: cervical cancer is not just an older woman's disease. Jade was only 27 years old. While most women who are diagnosed with cervical cancer are of older age, young women are diagnosed -it is possible. Our best defense against cervical cancer is having a regular Pap smear. Gardasil, the HPV vaccine, is also an excellent way for young women protect themselves against the virus known to cause cervical cancer in women.
