Study Shows Most People Learn About HPV Vaccine Through Ads - Did You?

From , Former About.com GuideMarch 4, 2009

A new study out of the University of North Carolina has found that most people, including healthcare providers, have learned about the HPV vaccine through advertising by the vaccine manufacturer. While the federal government like the CDC has pamphlets about the vaccine and information online, it appears that vaccine maker, Merck, has been successful in its big budget marketing campaign.

I fully support the HPV vaccine, but what does this have to say about other heavily marketed drugs? We as consumers have the right to information from more than a biased source - the manufacturer. So, where do we get unbiased information? When I am prescribed a new medication or am going to have my child vaccine, I don't take what I read a t face value. I research it. I find information from:
  • CDC
  • FDA
  • accounts from others who have taken the same medication
  • my physician, most importantly

Don't rely on commercials or print advertising for your healthcare information. Use multiple sources to gather information and make vital decisions based upon your findings and physician recommendations.
