LEEP procedure is both a treatment method used to remove abnormal tissue from the cervix. If left untreated, this tissue may progress into cervical cancer. So, a LEEP is performed as a means of treatment and cervical cancer preventative. Most women who are recommended for a LEEP aren't familiar with the procedure. Although it is commonly performed, it is one of those procedures that you don't hear about often. Once she is informed of how a LEEP is performed, fear and anxiety may set in. After all, a LEEP uses an electrically charged wire loop to remove abnormal tissue. Not exactly what I call a fun way to spend an afternoon!
Unfortunately, this fear often drives women to not have a LEEP - the exact opposite thing to do. A LEEP greatly reduces a woman with high risk cervical dysplasia from developing cervical, but only if she follows up on doctor's recommendations! Empower yourself by learning about recommended medical procedures like the LEEP. The more you know, the less anxiety you will have about the LEEP. As the old saying goes, knowing is half the battle!
